10 Reasons Why A Billion Is The New Million

When i was a kid, everyone talked about a million. One million was a threshold, which when surpassed was pretty dramatic. Now, its all about the billion – which is why a billion is the new million! In this post, i highlight a couple of interesting lists that showcase why a billion is the new million.

What is a Billion?

A billion is a thousand million: 1,000,000,000 or 109

Since i was looking at a billion,  i was curious and checked to see ‘what is a trillion’. A trillion is million million: 1,000,000,000,000 or 1012. Interesting, eh? I’m pretty certain that soon, we’ll be saying a “trillion is the new billion”.

Billion is the New Million because….:

1. Everyone wants to be a billionaire

The world’s billionaires are often seen as leaders in their particular field, and many are curious about who they are, where they came from and how they managed to build their respective empires. Like them or loathe them, these guys are are changing things!

Namely China and India. As the population in these countries grow they have both domestic and international implications

4. YOU can reach over a Billion people through YouTube

When you’re able to reach over a billion people, thats mighty impressive. The gold standard when it comes to YouTube is a billion views. A million views or maybe even a couple of hundred million views is great, but a billion – Wow – thats another level! At the time of writing, there are 27 YouTube videos with a Billion views – and the most surprising for me is the nursery rhyme “the wheels on the bus”.

5. Everyone wants a Unicorn

These companies valued at $1 billion and above are the companies that are tearing up the rule books, leveraging technology and delivering new and innovative products

6. Sporting events with over a billion viewers capture the entire nation

Sporting events such as the Olympics, Football World Cup, UEFA Champions League, the Cricket World Cup and the Tour de France seem to capture entire nations in a unprecedented way. These big events virtually transcend everything else and have global audiences in excess of a billion

7. Technology Connect us

And the most popular platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Andriod and Baidu all have over a billion users

9. The Billion Milestone

Checkout these billion milestones:

  • Apple is expected some time this week to sell one billion iPhones
  • Facebook last week announced that Facebook Messenger has 1,000,000,000 monthly users
  • Last month Uber CEO Travis Kalanick announced, via Facebook, 2 billion trips
  • Michael Jordan was the first billion dollar athlete
  • US Steel was the first billion dollar company
  • 26 films have topped the billion dollar revenue mark

10. Its all about Perspective

Let’s face it – most of us dont really know, understand or have a real understanding of what a billion is. The post If the World were 100 people is really interesting, since it explains the world of billions in a simple way that most of us can relate to. As we talk about billionaires, education, social media, equality (or rather inequality) this post highlights a massive gulf in various spheres that clearly needs to be bridged. With this comes opportunity, maybe in the opportunity lies the next billion
